KRSP Database
LongTerm Database
The KRSP database is a relational mySQL database housed in the cloud on Amazon Web Services (AWS) servers. New data are merged into the longterm data annually. At this time, errors are corrected and an updated version is posted annually. The longterm database is accessible from anywhere by anyone with a username and password. Contact Andrew McAdam to be provided with a username and password.
Annual Database
A subset of the longterm database is extracted and used to populate a fresh annual database each year. The annual database is housed on a laptop at Squirrel Camp that is set up to run as a server on our local network. Four data entry laptops connect to the annual database through the local network using a custom Grails designed web interface. In addition, a custom iPod app allows field workers to quickly enter data in the field and sync data to the local server once back at camp.
Data Checking in the Field
We have written a custom R Shiny App that connects to the annual instance of the database in the field and allows field workers to visualize incoming data in meaningful ways. This helps to target field efforts and to identify errors or gaps in data collection so they can be fixed immediately.
Data Backups
Field data are backed up to an external drive daily and exported and sent manually to PI McAdam on a weekly basis. McAdam posts weekly updates of the field database to a cloud version of the mySQL database housed by AWS. At the end of the season the entire annual database is checked for any remaining errors and these are resolved. The cleaned annual database is appended to the long-term database
